About De Baun Fine Ceramics
De Baun Fine Ceramics has been around since about 1994. There is one employee: me! (Diane De Baun)Located in the rural area of Sage, California, a beautiful area with lots of open space, oaks, manzanita, sagebrush, elderberry trees, wild lilac, quail, rabbits, hawks, ravens, crows, a variety of birds, a few skunks, coyotes, a few bobcats, mountain lions, one raccoon, road runners, too many ground squirrels, rattlesnakes (among other snakes) and a migration of tarantulas come summer. Oh, I almost forgot the troops of stink bugs and millipedes.
At one time in the past, (1800’s) Sage was an area where many beekeepers lived because of the abundance of flowering wild plants. The stagecoach had a route that used to come through from San Diego and there were old buildings and stables near my house where people stayed over when traveling on the stagecoach. Unfortunately that historic site burnt down in 2005 with a big fire that swept right through here and all around my house.
My studio is the garage, which has been taken over completely. Parts of the house have also been taken over (and may end up consuming the whole house!)
All artwork is handmade using the slab roller and coil-building technique. I use glazes I make myself and a few commercial glazes as well. Most of the designs are my original creations which I make into hand carved stamps. A few designs are made with Nepalese hand carved wooden stamps.
My designs reflect my interests: love of nature in its many forms, various cultures and different religions and spiritual paths of the world.
